High Glycemic Foods

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about Glycemic. When you start sharing the fascinating Glycemic facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

In 1981, Dr. David Jenkins of the University of Toronto came up with a ranking system for carbohydrates based upon how long it takes them to break down into the system. Some carbohydrates break down very slowly and those release glucose gradually into the bloodstream and have a low glycemic index. For people who are diabetes, particularly those who are insulin dependent, a low glycemic index is preferable. These foods allow the insulin or medication to respond better to the blood glucose and allows for the sugars to break down more naturally.

Other foods are rated high on the Glycemic Index. These foods currently have high ratings and raise the blood glucose level quickly. High glycemic foods can be beneficial for people who are recovering from high exertion or those suffering from hypoglycemia. People with Type I or Type II Diabetes should avoid high glycemic foods as they can play havoc with the insulin or medication they are taking.

Some examples of foods that considered high glycemic foods include corn flakes, white rices such as jasmine rice, white breads and baked potatoes. People who have diabetes, either Type I or Type II, should avoid these foods as much as possible.

Other foods that are high glycemic foods include those with large amounts of white refined sugar or white flour. One thing a doctor will tell a patient on how to avoid high glycemic foods is to avoid anything white. This includes white bread, pasta made with white flour and even cakes or sweets made with refined white sugar or white flour.

Think about what you’ve read so far. Does it reinforce what you already know about Glycemic? Or was there something completely new? What about the remaining paragraphs?

High glycemic foods tend to take a long time to digest in the system of a diabetic. The glucose, or sugar, stays in the blood because the system of a diabetic is unable to process the refine sugars and flours. The glucose stays in the blood and in the urine causing the diabetic to frequently urinate, experience thirst and hunger more than the average person and sweat profusely.

After a while, this takes its toll on the system of a diabetic. The kidneys begin to hurt because they are not functioning properly. This is one symptom that diabetics often present with when seeking a physician. They also get blood in their urine and, in the worst case scenario, they faint or enter into an episode of semi-consciousness, confusion which can even lead to a diabetic coma. In some instances, a diabetic coma can prove fatal.

People who have Type I and Type II diabetes should be very mindful of which foods have a high glycemic index and avoid these foods in their diet. With proper diet, medication or insulin and monitoring of blood sugars, diabetics can lead a normal lifespan.

Diabetes is not a death sentence at all. It is simply a condition that many people possess that does not allow their body to break down sugars and starches through their system so that they digest normally. Diabetes is harmful to an individual who does not follow the advice of their physician, does not consume a proper diet and does not monitor their blood glucose levels. People who adhere to the medical guidelines concerning diabetes have just as much of a chance of living a normal life as anyone else.

England Vacation Guide

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

The following article covers a topic that has recently moved to center stage–at least it seems that way. If you’ve been thinking you need to know more about it, here’s your opportunity.

Here is the basic information you need to know on your England vacation:

Arrival and Departure
When arriving or departing to and from England, you will probably land at the Heathrow Airport, the largest airport and one of the busiest airports in the world. It is located 15 miles (24km) west of central London; or at London Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the England, which is 28 miles (45km) south of central London. (No departure tax.)

Both airports are connected to London by an underground railway network. The city can also be reached by taxi that is available outside each airport’s terminal.

Flight to England
It takes more than 8 hours if you are traveling from New York and longer if you are departing from central U.S., the mid-west, the southern Atlantic state, or the west coast.

Time to visit
The best time to visit England is during the months of July to September, when the weather is at its best and daylight hours are the longest. However, this is also the time when tourists visit England so the rates are higher, the streets are more crowded and the queues are longer. Low season is from November to March. If you do not mind the chilling cold of England winter and would like to take advantage of the cheaper rates, then take your pick from these months. Shoulder season is from April to June and the month of October.

Where to go
England may be a small country but it offers a lot of attractions, museums and world renowned sights that you should not miss visiting. Visit some of the following sites: the Buckingham Palace, the Westminster Abbey, the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the National Gallery, Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Sir John Soane’s Museum, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, Notting Hill, the Trafalgar Square and the Admiralty Arch, among others.

Most of this information comes straight from the England Vacation pros. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you’ll know what they know.

Where to stay
Hotels are abundantly available especially in major cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Liverpool. However, hotels in these cities are very expensive especially during the high season. Premium price is paid for rooms with bathrooms.

For a budget traveler, Bed and Breakfasts are the preferred choice. They are cheap, clean, convenient, comfortable and hospitable. Bathrooms are often shared with other guests but the rooms are generally comfortable.

Getting around

? Renting a car ? If you are traveling as a group and planning to explore the country side, then renting a car is a good choice. But pass on car rental option if you will spend most of your time in the city.

Note: The driver seat is at the right hand side of the vehicle.

? Bus, taxi and the Tube ?Busses, taxis and trains are the most popular means to get around the city. London is popular for its double-decker busses. All cities and towns have bus services as well. All cities have taxi services. Taking the underground railways system in London (or what is commonly referred to as the Tube) is a good experience. Suburban rail services are available in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and the cities in Newcastle and South Yorkshire. Tram routes are available in south London.

? Boats ? Commuter and leisure boat services are available on the River Thames.

Things to Know Before Taking a Skiing Vacation

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary.

What are you planning this winter vacation? It’s almost near and by now you should already have a carefully laid out plan so that you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest. If you’re looking for excitement, nothing is more fun than taking a skiing vacation with your family, your loved one, or even your friends.

Feel the cold air as it slices over your cheeks while you slide down the slopes of the mountainsides. After that, you can enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee in your hotel or apartment. Some women also love ski vacations because of the handsome and cute instructors. But wait, before you even rush out of your house, you should know what to take with you in your suitcase.

Careful planning is needed before you finally decide to pack your things for vacation. First and foremost, you have to make the necessary reservations. There are various ski resorts packages offered and you can choose among them. You have to ensure that you choose a vacation package that you can afford so as not to exhaust all your savings. Once you’re through with the reservations, you have to call the hotel or the resort and inquire about the place where you’re going to stay. That way, you will know if you will bring you toiletries and towels with you. Luxurious hotels usually provide for these things and so there is no need to bring any with you when you travel.

Some ski resorts offer individual cabins. You have to know if your cabin is a bit far from the main hotel or lodge. That way, you can bring extra coats aside from your ski suits. If you’re staying at the main hotel, you can still bring an extra coat with you; just in case you want to take a walk outside.

What are the attractions that you can find in the resorts? You have to know these things so that you can also prepare some of your personal stuff. For example, the resort may offer hot tubs, special events or parties, boxing or yoga lessons, etc. If you’re interested with these activities, you must bring appropriate clothing or attire.

If you don’t have accurate details regarding Skiing Vacation, then you might make a bad choice on the subject. Don’t let that happen: keep reading.

For those individuals who are taking vitamins or prescription medications, it would be best to take some with you but bring only the exact medicines needed.

First time ski vacationers should bring their favorite mug or pillow just in case they get homesick. Many vacationers feel this way and personal things you bring can give you comfort.

One of the most important considerations is food. Does the main hotel have restaurants? Are the foods affordable? What kinds of cuisines are offered? Can you easily grab some snacks if you feel hungry? Does your cabin have a personal kitchen? You must be able to get answers to these questions so that you can also prepare for your food budget.

If you have other questions in your mind, don’t hesitate to call the resort. They have customer representatives who are willing to answer all your queries. If you prepared for everything, nothing can ruin your skiing vacation. So what are waiting for? Pack your things now and spend a memorable vacation at the ski resort.

This winter season may be the best vacation that you can have because you’re prepared for everything.

What is Acupuncture?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The following article includes pertinent information that may cause you to reconsider what you thought you understood. The most important thing is to study with an open mind and be willing to revise your understanding if necessary.

What is acupuncture? It is a form of holistic healthcare that is used to prevent and treat certain diseases as well as relieve pain and anesthetize patients for surgery. Research shows that this began in China and has been practiced for more than 5,000 years.

The earliest account of this is found in the book called Nei Jing which in English means the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine. The contents of this book date somewhere around 200 BC. Back then, they did not use metal needles and instead used those made out of stone, moxibustion and herbs to treat a patient.

Acupuncture prevents and treats diseases by inserting very fine needles into the skin specifically at the anatomic points of the body.

The principle behind this concept is that illnesses occur because there is an imbalance in your life force otherwise known as Qi. It is believed that this flows in 14 channels in the human body known as meridians which branch out to bodily organs and functions. If there is a blockage or obstruction in any of them, this is when you succumb to a disease or an illness.

The imbalance in the Qi may go one way or the other because of Yin and Yang. The person can only be normal if there is harmony between the two which is what acupuncture is trying to achieve. This can only be restored by stimulating these acupuncture points so your Qi can be adjusted, balanced and harmonized.

Apart from using needles, practitioners also use friction, heat, impulses of electromagnetic energy and pressure to stimulate these points in order to balance the movement of energy in the body to reduce one’s health.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Acupuncture. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

An example of this is sonopuncture where an ultrasound device that transmits sound waves is applied to these points in the body. Some use a tuning fork and other vibration devices.

Acupressure is another example and here, the fingers are used to relive the pain. This can be used by itself or with other manual healing techniques.

Impulses of electromagnetic energy are used because our bodies generate tiny but electrical discharges which influence the function, growth and maturity of certain types of cells. By inserting the needles in these areas, it stimulates and alters the neurotransmitters in the body thus making the patient feel better after treatment. This is also sometimes used for diagnosis and testing.

According to the World Health Organization or WHO, here is a list of some illnesses where acupuncture is used. These include acute bronchitis, the common cold, cataract, toothaches, gingivitis, hiccups, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, headache and migraine, Meniere’s disease, osteoarthritis and a lot more. In the US, acupuncture is often used to treat chronic pain conditions and mind body disorders.

But acupuncture is not risk free. Hematoma may develop if the needle punctures a circulatory structure. It is also possible that pneumothorax may occur if the needle is inserted too deep. There is also the risk of HIV and hepatitis if the needle was not properly sterilized.

Now that you know what acupuncture is, you must not forget that it is merely an alternative and not a proper form of medical treatment. This means you should still be examined by a professional in the medical field who can determine the severity of your illness or disease.

Is there really any information about Acupuncture that is nonessential? We all see things from different angles, so something relatively insignificant to one may be crucial to another.

Pet Birds On The Move

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Pet birds are very sensitive in moving or changing locations. Small changes in the rooms can make a big impact on birds and can even stress them out. But sometimes moving is inevitable and travelling is unavoidable. There would be times when you cannot afford not to move. How can you make moving and travelling easy on your pet birds?

To make changing addresses easier on your pets, here are some tips to lessen stress:

? Moving is extremely stressful not just for pet owners but also for the pets as well. The birds will sense that something is going on just by seeing you packing and getting busy. This would already start the stress, so you can talk to your bird and explain things. Seeing your assuring face will somehow ease the stress. Your pets may not understand you, but they can read and understand your body movements. If you are calm, they would also calm down. It would be better to move your bird in a quiet and secure place while finishing the rest of the packing.

? Your companionship with your bird will give you hints if your pet bird is more sensitive than other birds. You can identify if your bird is a nervous traveller. There are also some birds who find riding a vehicle very enjoyable.

? Once the movers are already in your house and picking up your things, put the bird away in a quiet and calm place. Your pet bird should be the last to leave and should be in travel cages. Upon arriving in the new home, put the bird in a quiet place first before bringing the boxes and the things inside your home. To relax and calm the bird, you can play some music. This would also lessen the sounds coming from the unpacking.

? If moving to a new place requires a long drive, the stops should be kept to minimum. You can just buy food at a drive-thru. If you prefer eating in a restaurant, consider the weather conditions when leaving your pet in the car. It may get too cold or too hot for them to be left inside.

? If you are moving from state to another state, it would require a very long move. You also have to check the state regulations about your pets. Sometimes, a certain state might have laws that could prohibit your bird, especially if you are taking care of an exotic bird.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there’s more to Pet Birds than you may have first thought.

? For long distance moves, check hotels or motels you would be sleeping in if they have pet regulations. They can charge additional for bringing pets. You do not want to leave your pet outside in the car at the mercy of predators.

? Also when moving, whether it s state to state or just to another city, make sure to have a health certificate from your veterinarian. You would find this handy when getting a new vet in the new location you have moved to.

When travelling with your pets, preparation is an important factor. If you are going to fly for instance, it would require a great deal of preparation. Make sure that the airlines you are flying with allow birds, if it is international flight birds are mostly placed in cargo area. You have to make sure that the birds are comfortable throughout the flight.

Actually, you can help your pet get used to travelling, you can take it out in short day trips. Just remember that when taking your bird out for a drive, do not put him in the front seat. If the air bag suddenly opens, the impact could result to severe, even fatal, injuries.

When taking your pet bird out in car, be sensitive. There are some birds who prefer to have the cage covered, while there are some birds who would like to know what is happening around him. Be careful with the noise inside the car like the music and also be careful of the fumes they can inhale like air fresheners or cigarette smoke.

When travelling or moving, it is important to make sure that your pet birds are comfortable throughout the travelling period.

Sometimes it’s tough to sort out all the details related to this subject, but I’m positive you’ll have no trouble making sense of the information presented above.
